Your Role
This role will be specifically targeted to work on the Agriculture, Food, and Forestry (AFF) programs that the PIM team manages, with a large portion of your time spent on the $300mln Mobilising Finance for Forests (MFF) program.
As Associate, you will support the MFF Portfolio Manager in running the program within FMO (~80% of your time), which includes:
- Portfolio selection and monitoring (while investment teams drive and execute the investment process, the PIM team advises and steers on which transactions best fit the portfolio; our monitoring focuses on overall portfolio composition rather than individual client performance);
- Monitoring and implementing the MFF contractual obligations;
- Periodic reporting to the UK and Dutch governments;
- Managing liquidity of the program; Maintaining and updating portfolio management models and liquidity models for the program;
- Collaborating with other departments within FMO (investment teams, finance, impact measurement, evaluations, ESG+, strategy, and legal) on various parts of the program delivery. In this role you will get to know a large part of the organization;
- You will be a key liaison for the UK and Dutch government stakeholder relationships and represent the MFF program externally at events;
- Over time, develop expertise in the forestry, sustainable land use, natural capital, and biodiversity investment sectors;
- Support fundraising for additional blended finance funding for forestry and agriculture.
You will also provide support to the AFF cluster within the PIM team, which includes:
- Coordination and collaboration with other FMO managed blended finance programs that are active in the AFF sector;
- Support with fund raising and business development in line with FMO’s strategic objectives, especially to deliver on FMO’s Agri, Food, and Forestry 2030 strategy;
- General PIM team projects and operational topics;
- Support relevant FMO departments with internal change management to ensure an effective uptake of new blended finance programs.
The role can be filled at Associate level, and involves support to the portfolio manager, donor engagement, and representation of the program internally and externally.
This role is an opportunity to contribute to developing and enabling further investment into the forestry and sustainable land use investment sector, which is key for meeting global climate ambitions. You will have the opportunity to build your expertise in these emerging investment sectors and influence the flow of capital to impactful projects on the ground while working at a leading development finance organization.

Your Team
FMO has been a pioneer in designing and managing partnerships for innovative public and blended financing to support entrepreneurs and projects for more than 20 years. The Public Investment Management & Blended Finance (PIM) team unlocks financing and technical assistance for impactful businesses that are scalable but do not yet qualify for financing from Development Finance Institutions (DFIs).
Our public funds and guarantee programs pave the way for DFIs and other impact investors by using concessional funding from our funding partners, such as the Dutch and UK government and the European Commission to lower investment risks when they are considered too high.
We have raised and currently manage more than EUR 2.8 billion in public funds, blended finance programs, and sub-delegated fund mandates. The PIM team is part of the Partnerships for impact (“P4i”) department.
The PIM team is looking for an Associate to work on public programs within the Agriculture, Food, and Forestry sector, with a specific focus on the Mobilising Finance for Forests program. The Associate will report to the Manager, Public Investment Management and Blended Finance.
The Mobilising Finance for Forests (MFF) program is funded by the UK government and the government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The MFF program directs concessional funding and Technical Assistance through funds and direct investments to private sector forestry and sustainable land use projects—often involving nascent business models, frontier markets, or jurisdictions with weak enabling conditions. By demonstrating the viability, profitability and impact of these projects, MFF mobilizes private and public sector investments. The MFF program is an important component of FMO’s own ambition to invest up to 1 billion EUR into forestry by 2030.
